Andrea Yeung BA, MA, RCC, is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, an Artist and Musician, who believes in the resiliency of the human spirit, the relevance of holistic health, and the importance of self acceptance in the search for meaning and journey of healing. Andrea’s first degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Sciences, Linguistics and Psychology, from the University of British Columbia. She later graduated with a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University, one of the three accredited master’s level counselling programs in Canada (others include the University of British Columbia, and Acadia University). Andrea is accredited as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) by the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), license number: 11254. Andrea is also certified as a Level I Observed Experiential Integration (OEI) Therapist and is trained in Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. Andrea has used both these therapeutic techniques to address clients with complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR and OEI are experiential therapies that integrate the perception of disturbing cognitions, emotions, and sensations to help the mind process through, and heal from trauma related disorders.
Andrea is an integrative therapist, who counsels out of an Existential framework, while also combining techniques and principles from Narrative Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Satir Family Therapy, Psychodynamic Theory, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, and Observed Experiential Integration (OEI) therapy. Andrea is also a musician and an artist, and specializes in using Art Therapy and Music Therapy techniques within her counselling practice. Andrea believes in the power of self-expression and creation within one’s narrative and healing process. She also offers the option of integrating spirituality and theology with psychology within sessions.
Andrea has experience counselling individual adults and couples dealing with depression, anxiety, anger issues, explosive behaviours, suicidal ideation, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), life restructuring, grief, existential crises, and guilt. Andrea has counselled individuals from different cultures, and is sensitive to different nuances in culture, ethnicities, and spiritual backgrounds. Andrea also uses art therapy techniques to work through trauma, and music therapy techniques to unlock emotion and process through one’s narrative. Andrea has also done work with individuals seeking to make sense of life’s meaning, purpose, and his or her identity.
Andrea also has experience in the mental health field, counselling children, youth, and families at BC Children’s Hospital, addressing mental health concerns such as: schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, conversion disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorders, borderline disorder, trauma, family conflict, and sexually intrusive behaviours. Andrea also worked with children with autism and is sensitive to the dynamics and challenges that are faced in a home that includes a child or parent with mental illness and/or a developmental disorder.
In addition to private practice, Andrea currently works at Family Services of Greater Vancouver, as a Family Counsellor. She is part of the Family Preservation and Reunification Services branch of FSGV, working with Parents and Children to prevent out-of-home placement, and also working to reunite children with their families. This branch helps families focus on addressing challenges and barriers in family life, working with parents to develop skills and strategies to cope with challenges within their family life, and parenting journey.
Andrea also works for Tenth Church, as their Director of Healing Ministries. In this role, she initiates, coordinates and oversees programs that encourage holistic healing, and collaborative care in the congregation and surrounding community. She also serves as an in-house counselling referral for the Tenth community.
